In January 2018, Prime Minister Trudeau became the first Prime Minister to acknowledge systemic discrimination and anti-Black racism exists in Canada. He also cited the lack of support for Black people with mental health issues. Under his leadership, the 2018 and 2019 federal budgets included, for the first time, money specifically to address these issues affecting Black Canadians.
I am a member of the Federal Black Employee Caucus (FBEC) <Add a link to our website.> which is an organization currently working with Treasury Board, the Public Service Commission and senior public service and union officials to help the government fulfill the Prime Minister’s commitments under the UN Decade for People of African Descent (2014-25). The attendance and stories shared at our meetings clearly show that Black employees face issues of discrimination in workplace and my story is disturbingly common in the federal public service.
I am writing to ask you to intervene on my behalf to ensure <Insert name of department or agency.) complies with Prime Minister Trudeau’s commitment to addressing systemic discrimination and anti-Black racism in Canada.
